Matthew Reilly
Signing for his latest book The Four Legendary Kingdoms

Matthew Reilly is an Australian author who was born in Sydney in 1974, he graduated from St Aloysius’ College in Sydney in 1992 then studied law at the University of New South Wales. Matthew has one older brother named Stephen, he met his wife Natalie while at University and they married in 2004. Unfortunately, in 2011 while he was on tour for his book Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves, Natalie committed suicide.
Matthew was relucent to go on tour for his book because of his concerns for her, by the time Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves came out Natalie seemed to be doing better and he decided to go on tour for the new book. After her death Matthew, stopped writing for a while and didn’t publish any books until 2013. When The Tournament was published, Matthew said in an interview that finishing this book was hard because it was the one he was working on before his wife die. Matthew Reilly said in an interview with the ABC “I’m finding myself again and as far as I’m concerned, you know, 2012, the year after Natalie died, will just be a year that I checked out but it’s also a year that I regained my strength.” All of his fans are glad that he did and started writing again.
If Cate Paterson*, hadn’t walked in to Angus & Robertson’s Pitt Street Mall store in 1997, we wouldn’t have the wold wide phenomenon known as Matthew Reilly. When Matthew tried to get his first book Contest published back in 1996, it was rejected by every major publisher in Sydney. Refusing to give up like many would have, Matthew Reilly self-published 1000 copies of the book, then sold the books in book shops throughout Sydney one shop at a time. ‘I knew Contest had the goods,’ Matthew said, ‘and I just wanted to get it noticed. I knew that publishers checked out bookshops so that’s where I needed my book to be.’ Now his books are so popular, you would be hard-pressed to find a copy of the original self-published Contest one was sold on eBay for $1200. Cate love the book so much that when she found out Matthew was working on his next book Ice Station, she was thrilled and sign him up for a two-book deal. And the rest as they say is history.
